If you find yourself at the crossroads of insomnia and insanity, this is the place to channel those demons that keep you sleepless. Vivid pictures, poetry, ruminations, and confessions from the nether hours between dusk and dawn. Originally formed to celebrate the city at night, there's a strong urban theme.
Dedicated to promoting global sustainability, this community offers a forum for discussing current environmental news, research, and issues with tips on how to make positive, pro-active changes to reduce carbon impact. You'll also find information on how to get involved in eco-activism and learn about events near you (i.e., act local; think global). Offering a wealth of data on earth-friendly products and practices, you'll be inspired to don an organic bamboo cape and save the planet.
Self-described as "a little community with a lot of rage," you can soak up impassioned vibes and read blistering exposes detailing sexist attitudes in the news, pop culture, and science! A must-join community if you are, or love, a feminist. (NB: the topic of whether a "man" can be a feminist is outside the scope of this spotlight, but will probably wind up on the Writer's Block.)
Hi everyone!
Enough fresh news material has been accumulated for us to make a second newsletter edition soon after the previous one. It's always better to divide information into manageable instalments rather than write a multi-page epic!
* The 'Apartments for Everyone' free apartment building that offers non-teachers a free small space with an 150 prim allowance for a period of six-months is now set up and operational on Eduisland 8. We're looking at basing this service on the 'Salvation Army' model of hospitality, the difference being that instead of providing biblical sermons in exchange for a safe place to stay, we plan to expose them to educational information and services instead for the duration of their stay in the building. If you have friends who are not teachers but might be interested in giving Second Life a try then please do refer them onwards to us.
* Video screens have now been installed at every Media Listening Point in order to provide a media streaming facility for anybody who wishes to display movies to a mass audience or display a remote desktop streamed into SL via the LLMedia API.
* We now have a new event for the month of January to replace December's photographic exhibit. Please drop by the temporary hall attached to the side of the Eduisland 3 conference center to view the Fleet-created 'Living & Learning' information exhibit, which was originally shown on Eduisland 2 in 2008 and is making its repeat tour for 2010. It will be running from now until Jan 31.
SLurl to the exhibit:

* In the last edition of the newsletter we also covered the two STEM videogame creation contests being sponsored by, among others, the McArthur Foundation, and promised to lend support to anyone who was interested in participating in these contests. Although the contest rules will not be released until early 2010, we have analyzed the press release about the contests and created some thoughts, tips and ideas for you to consider.
'GAME CHANGERS' CONTEST
The aim of the 'Game Changers' contest is to create a level for the Playstation 3 videogame 'LittleBigPlanet' that embodies STEM learning principles within its design. Some things to consider for the contest are:
- Applications are judged on 'participatory learning (e.g what you learn by playing the level), 'support of learning related to STEM (e.g information rezzed into visual form) and 'the degree to which assessment of learning is integrated into the learning experience itself' (e.g the level's puzzles should be designed so that the player has to learn STEM principles early in the level and then build upon their understanding of them in order to complete the puzzles that appear later in the level).
- If you have access to a Playstation 3 and the 'LittleBigPlanet' game then tips and tricks for creating LittleBigPlanet levels can be found by taking apart great levels made by other players to explore their mechanics. If you do not have access to the console or the game then Youtube videos of LBP levels can also inspire.
- LBP teaches advance planning skills due to missed mistakes having the potential to cause the ruination of a level design later on in its development.
- The creators of LBP, Media Molecule, recently held an award ceremony called the 'Sackies' (named after the names they give to the player character, Sackboy and Sackgirl). The level judged to be Most Innovative was an educational design called 'Little Big Calculator). Here is a link to a video of the level in action:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZiRgYBHo AoU
The other competition covered in the press release was the STEM National Video Game Competition'. Some points that entrants to this competition could bear in mind are:
- Judging by the description in the press release, the competition task appears to be to produce a design document for a game but not actually produce the game itself. Tools such as Scratch and Unity could be used by young designers though to prototype and test the ideas that would work best in an actual browser game.
- The game that the organizers will produce from the design document will be especially targeted at girls and minority students. This means that the design should probably focus on visual imagery instead of descriptive text in order to best cater respectively to the style of game that is appealing to young girls and the capabilities of minority-group players (who may be speakers of English as a Second Language) in order to have a greater chance of being a winning entry.
We will continue to provide information about these two STEM contests as the year progresses.
* Finally, to get you in the mood for creatin', let's end with a video that demonstrates how cool STEM can really be!

Eight Zero welcomes you to 2010 and your first hangover of the decade! There's no better way to beat a solid hangover than with a major party at Second Life's newest and most rad Eighties club.
12 - 2pm - DJ Sredni Eel's New Wave Mania. -- I've gathered monumental songs from the era of New Wave music. You'll hear familiar tracks and some you may have overlooked. It was a brave sound and the vibe it radiates is energizing. Ministry, Replacements, Siouxsie, Depeche Mode and more. I'm taking your requests!
2 - 4pm - DJ Random's Number Ones! -- Random has all of your favorites from the Billboard charts, plus all of your requests. She's got everything from A-Ha to ZZ Top for your listening pleasure.
4 - 6pm - DJ Zach's Dirty Dancing. -- Zach's got you covered for the Dirty Dancing portion of the program. He's got it all, and is not afraid to flaunt it. Thrill to his crazy trivia and factoids, and be sure to hit him up with your requests because it'll just give him a warm fuzzy feeling.
The logo takes you there. Happy New Year!
On now, at the Moonbase.

Later addition:
Well I went and it was fun. I logged out to feed pets in RL, and when I logged back in I'd found that the SIM had been restarted! It came back online 3 minutes to midnight SL time, and there was me, and the DJ! Still fun though.
I am no newbie to SL, but I have never delved into the world of renting land for a place to live. I have no understanding of tiers, prims allowed, or anything like that. Can someone please provide at least a basic level explanation of the renting business in SL? I need to find an affordable place to live and I don't want to get myself into something I can't afford just because I don't understand the terms and lingo.
Thanks in advance!!

Hi everyone!
In advance of a more substantial news update in the New Year, we wanted to send out an intermediate pre-New Year message to mention the pieces of news that we can release right now so that we don't have to make you wait.
* Following our introduction of the 30 day free trial apartment friend-referral program in 2009, we are looking at expanding that program into a wider scheme that is provisionally called 'Apartments for Everyone'. The scheme will allow anyone – not just professionals - to have a free apartment space on the Eduislands for a period of six months, the catches being that (a) there will be a limited number of these apartments available which will be allocated on a first come first served basis, (b) the tenants of these apartments must log into Second Life at least once during a two week period in order to keep the space, (c) the apartment spaces will be smaller than those available through the 30 day friend referral program (which will be continuing unchanged as a wholly separate tenant benefit program from 'Apartments for Everyone), and (d) the prim allowance for these spaces will be lower than that of the 30 day apartments.
The 'Apartments for Everyone' apartment block will be placed on an area at our zoned campus on Eduisland 8 so that there is no risk of non-educator tenants causing problems for our paying clients. We will, of course, continue to rapidly act against any individual who does not comply with the behavioral Terms and Conditions of the Eduislands.
* On the subject of Eduisland 8, we have now fixed a glitch in the settings that allowed people to fly onto the sim but not to teleport onto it. We will also be moving ahead with setting up the secure-access oceanside zone on the sim for counselors and corporate trainers and, of course, intensifying our efforts to attract counselors and corporate trainers to occupy the space
* Remembering to change the date on documents and checks is a problem that is faced by everyone when New Year arrives. This coming year though is an additional challenge, as the digit change is a double one instead of single one! We would therefore like to offer a useful tip to aid the transition - write '10' on the end of the date line on some of your checks in your check book and you will not have to worry about your payments being returned because they have '09' written on them
* We have added a new high-end building to the range of buildings that we provide for free to tenants. Constructed by the same creator as our impressive Conference Center on Eduisland 3, this four-level 80m x 45m unit with elevator and realistic lighting offers an exciting new option to large institutions who want a professional office or educational retail space that reflects the size of their land and is not a 'hut in the corner' (as our smaller free buildings can resemble when placed on an 8192 sq m land or higher). This unit normally costs $32 USD to purchase on the open market, so we are delighted to be able to install it for free for our users. Here is an image of the building:

* Quoting from a news release: “Supporting President Obama’s call for a renewed focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) and the Information Technology Industry Council (ITI), Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA), Microsoft Corporation, and the MacArthur Foundation have announced a suite of various efforts to engage and motivate students in STEM learning. The organizations will work to harness the excitement surrounding computer and video games through a series of STEM-related video game design competitions”. Further details can be found in the full press release document:

Sambiglyon is a passionate advocate and researcher of methods to enhance youth STEM teaching and so will be considering ways in which it can assist people who wish to participate in the contests, which are scheduled to have further details about their rules and application procedures released in early 2010. We will talk about the contests further in a future news release. In the meantime, we welcome communications from Eduislands users and their colleagues about how they might get their schools involved in these competitions – we will be pleased to be a sounding board for ideas and offer our own thoughts in return.
* In a past edition of the newsletter, we spoke about how Linden Lab has released the LLMedia API, which is part of the 'Snowglobe' viewer software ( http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Snowglo be ) will allow future plug-ins to be created for Second Life to enable the display in-world of more types of media than are presently supported. We also highlighted Aimee Trescothick's innovative use of LLMedia API to support the live streaming of computer desktops onto the surface of a prim in the same way that video media is displayed in Second Life (a process known as VNC). Here's Aimee's demonstration movie again if you missed it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YRlM-DiZ Wgg
For those who do not mind teleporting their audience to another location in order to view a desktop streaming, the seven public Media Listening Points spread across the Eduislands network should also support the display of desktop stream URLs set by members of the 'Eduisland Streamers' group, which can be joined for free using group joiner objects at every Listening Point.
The primary reason for us coming back to the subject of desktop streaming though is the possibility that it provides for Eduislands users to be able to show webcam video broadcasts of themselves in-world by using software that is commonly supplied on their webcam's installation disc to display what the cam sees as a desktop window and then stream that live moving desktop to Second Life, using the usual Second Life voice application to overlay their voice over the cam image via a microphone headset so that an audience can see and hear a person as if they were broadcasting to an instant messaging window such as MSN, AIM or Yahoo.
Because VNC can be difficult to set up, however, Sambiglyon will in the coming year be studying - as we do in our 'lab' with many other research areas - how to make setup and use of this technology much easier. We are speaking about the subject now though as a taster of the exciting possibilities that the LLMedia API, and creative people such as Aimee Trescothick, will bring to Second Life in the coming year.
There is far more going on in the Sambiglyon lab than we talk about publicly in advance – it's the nature of research that what is found to work is refined until it's in a form that is of the quality standards that we hold ourselves to before releasing a new feature, and what doesn't work goes back to the drawing board for another try at a future point in time. A paid tenancy with us does not just give our users the benefit of land to place their center on but also the fruits of constant research and ideas analysis that is going on quietly in the back rooms at Sambiglyon HQ. We are deeply grateful for the long-term loyalty that you give us even in the most trying of economic times and we never stop trying to find ways to provide rewards for that faith.
See you in 2010, have an wonderful New Year and above all else, THANK YOU!
